In December, Schafer students dove into Hour of Code, and classrooms were buzzing with creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving!
Kindergarten students began their coding journey by becoming “code writers,” creating directions so their partners could color pictures by code. This fun activity helped our youngest learners practice giving clear instructions while seeing how code can communicate ideas. Kindergarteners were very excited to see how their coded snowflakes turned out.
In 1st and 2nd grade, students took on hands-on coding challenges. They worked in groups to write sequence code, giving very specific directions to help their teammates move along a path, avoid obstacles, and pick up repair parts before reaching the finish line. Students also increased their vocabulary by using content specific words like command, delete, debug and more. These bright primary level students quickly learned how important precision and collaboration are when coding!
Third graders explored coding in two exciting ways. First, they programmed Beebots on their Chromebooks to complete missions their teachers gave them such as delivering pizzas to a school. Later, they coded VEX 123 robots in person to help Santa deliver presents, refuel on cookies, and return to the North Pole. These activities brought coding to life through real-world and seasonal challenges.
Fourth and fifth graders stepped into line coding as they programmed Ozobots to follow commands such as turbo speed, tornado, slow down, and U-turn. Students experimented, tested, and debugged their code while watching their robots come to life.
In addition, students in grades 3–5 had the opportunity to safely explore artificial intelligence by using AI tools to create their very own dance parties! This experience introduced them to AI in an engaging and responsible way.
What a wonderful way for our students to get excited about coding, collaboration, and using AI safely. The Hour of Code truly showcased the creativity and problem-solving skills of our young learners!
